Find below all the basic answers regarding permits and driver licenses for students are 18 and under as well as 24 and under.
The state of Texas requires all minors under the age of 18 to take a 32 hour driver education course. In the 32 hours, the student will prepare to take the permit test, then proceed to a better understanding of the laws of the road, hazards and best how to handle them, car maintenance, drug and alcohol influence and penalties, driving conditions and much more. A student can take the classroom at 14, but can not receive a permit until the age of 15.
The state requires 2 forms of ID, DE-964 form (provided by Classic after first six hours completed) and a verification of enrollment in a school. This school can be home taught, private or public. The two forms of ID must be a social security card and birth certificate. There are other forms that can substitute the birth certificate - see Permit Requirements page for more information.
To obtain another permit or have it renewed, the student must go to the Department of Public Safety (DPS). They will require a new VOE/TEA form from the students high school, social security card, and placement/renewal fee.
Whether you go through a commercial school or home school program, you will have to complete 34 + hours of driving instruction. This does not include your practice time. Our school offers 7 - 2 hour drive times in which the student receives 1 hour of behind the wheel instruction and 1 hour of observation. The student is required to log 10 hours of driving during the daylight with a parent and 10 hours of driving after dark with a parent. Once all practicing and skills have been obtained the student will take a proficiency test. If the student passes that test with us, we release them to take the final driving test with the local DPS office.
A student with a permit is never allowed to drive alone. You must have a licensed driver in the front seat over the age of 21 at all times.
Your parents must contact their insurance company for this information. There are many insurance companies and they all work a little different. Some require full coverage on a student with a permit, others do not require that coverage until the student gets their drivers license.
Yes, the State of Texas places a one year restriction on all minors. 1) You can not drive after 12 am and prior to 5 am. 2) You can not drive and use any electronic devices, i.e. phone (hand held or wireless) or ipod. 3) You can not have more than one other person in the car with you that is not immediate family.
Yes, there are several benefits. First, by completing a school program by a licensed company you will recieve a 10% discount on your insurance until you are 21 for girls and 25 for boys. If you receive a ticket or are in an accident they can cancel the discount. Also, by using a school that is certified by TEA and bonded you are receiving instruction by someone that has been trained to teach you properly the laws and rules of the road. They can make sure you are as safe as possible to be alone in a car on the road. Another benefit of using us is that we have dual brakes (one for the driver and one for the instructor) and dual mirrors.
No, the state now requires all adults 18-24 to complete a 6 hour drivers education course. Once the permit is acquired you can practice with a licensed operator in the front seat over the age of 21 until you have obtained the skills to pass the test at the local DPS office.
